Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a general term used to describe conditions affecting the heart or blood vessels. CVD is usually associated with a build-up of fatty deposits inside the arteries and an increased risk of blood clots, but can also be associated with damage to arteries in vital organs.

There are four main types of CVD:

  1. Coronary Heart Disease

  2. Peripheral Arterial Disease

  3. Strokes & Mini-Strokes

  4. Aortic disease

CVD is one of the main causes of death and disability in the UK, but it can often largely be prevented by leading a healthy lifestyle.

Around the world, there are many people who suffer from CVD which, more often than not, results in death. Of the yearly deaths worldwide, over 30% of these are due to CVD.

In the UK, approximately 34% of all adults live with CVD before they reach the age of 50. This figure is said to be on the increase due to factors such as poor diets, lack of exercise, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

CVD can largely be prevented by leading a healthy lifestyle. This is why health assessments are very necessary. They help you to identify any health issues (including CVD) early on and provide you with recommendations on how to live a healthier life. Health assessments are personalised so the recommendations given are not generic but instead specific to you and your lifestyle.
